Vartika, originally from Bihar and studying Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech) in Faridabad, has started a small tea-serving business on the road using her scholarship money. She chose an interesting name for her business, "B.Tech Chaiwali" B.Tech refers to her degree, and Chaiwali is a Hindi name referring to a tea-maker.
She says it took her two months to perfect the tea recipe, which originally belonged to her mother. She makes tea without water and uses milk instead. She adds a lot of masalas (herbs) that she claims are good for one's health and developed on her own. She uses sulphur-free sugar to keep in mind customers' health. She has appeared on a few news channels that noticed her compelling skills.
Being an Engineer, you may wonder what makes Vartika choose to start a tea-serving business by herself.
India produces thousands of Engineers and doctors yearly, and not all of the brightest population can find a job in their respective fields due to a lack of opportunities. As a result, some students graduate and head straight to foreign lands like Canada, Australia, the UK, the US, New Zealand and more to grab the opportunity for which they invested so much and worked hard.
Those times have arrived when you will see more and more women like Vartika developing and creating startups like this. After all, we all need a cup of hot java or chai ;)
She says, "I wanted to do something in life, so I thought, why not start a business while I complete my B.Tech. I belong to a tiny village in Bihar, and anything big starts from zero and then it reaches level hundred. My family doesn't know that I am doing this business and selling chai because their thinking is the same, too, that starting a tea stall is not a good thing and doesn't suit educated people. Men don't need to do every work; women can pursue that too. My startup is tiny right now. And, I am not only hoping but adamant that I want to take this on a high level."
