US safety regulators open investigation into complaint that Tesla seat belts may not work in a crash

Another probe into problems with Teslas has been opened by U.S. highway safety regulators, this time related to complaints that seat belts may not hold in a crash.

Approximately 50,000 Model X SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years are being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla owners have complained to the agency that their front belts weren't properly connected at the factory.

In documents posted by the agency Tuesday, the belt linkage and pretensioners, which tighten the belts before a collision, are anchored to the seat frames.

A force was exerted on the vehicles while they were driving, which caused the linkage and pretensioner to separate from the frames. In neither incident was there a crash.

A probe is being launched to investigate Tesla's manufacturing processes, how often the problem occurs, and how widespread it is. Recalls can be the result of investigations.

Tesla vehicles are also being investigated by the NHTSA for problems that date back to 2020. In these probes, Teslas have partially automated driving systems that can brake without reason or run into emergency vehicles.

Also investigated are complaints about steering wheels disconnecting suddenly and suspension parts failing.
