FRANCE — There may be only one social event rivaling the Met Gala in Cannes, France: the amfAR Gala. This event raises money for AIDS research and is held at the sprawling Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc during the Cannes Film Festival. It is a night of celebration and fundraising to fight against HIV/AIDS. Celebrities and philanthropists from around the world will come together to support the cause.
On May 25, guests were repeatedly reminded that H.I.V. was not extinct (approximately 38 million people had the virus in 2021).
A red carpet (this one was actually blue) lasted more than three hours because so many models and actors attended. Many people showed up fashionably late, skipping the photographers altogether.
Even celebrities have to wait in line at the bathroom (yes, even Orlando Bloom). Aidan Walsh, a close friend of Lucien Laviscount (Alfie in "Emily in Paris"), came to his table after starters. ("I wasn't in Bridgerton," Mr. Laviscount laughed.)
