A sleeping Tesla driver was caught doing nearly 70 mph on the highway after fixing his car's Autopilot, so he could take a nap, police say.

On December 28, officials in Bamberg, Germany, pursued a Tesla Model 3 after it was spotted traveling on the A7 autobahn at 70 mph.

Police chased the 45-year-old driver for 15 minutes with sirens and blue lights.

But it wasn't until they caught up with the car that they realized that he had fallen asleep lying on the steering wheel.

The driver was eventually awakened by the siren, confused and unsure what was happening.

Then he immediately stopped at an intersection.

Police later determined the driver was on drugs.

Police also found a special weight in the footwell that reportedly mimicked the hands on the steering wheel to trick Autopilot.

A spokesperson from the Upper Franconian police said: "It was evident that the vehicle kept the same distance from the patrol car in front from the Viereth-Trunstadt junction to the Bamberg-Hafen junction at 110 kilometres per hour.

"Officials determined that the Tesla driver was reclining in the seat with his eyes closed and his hands off the steering wheel.

"This strengthened the suspicion that he had left the controls to the autopilot and had fallen asleep."
