World Cup reporter Grant Wahl's death during Friday's match was the tragic end of a long and painful week of illness, which he spoke openly about the day before he died, according to tmz.
Grant recorded and released the podcast "Fútbol with Grant Wahl" on Thursday and said he was terribly sick with bronchitis...he'd "been to the medical clinic at the media center twice now, including today."
WALH's brother Eric Wahl said Grant received death threats in Qatar after he was arrested by stadium security in November... He wore a rainbow-themed t-shirt supporting LGBTQ+ rights. His detention made headlines as Qatar threatened to shut down all LGBTQ+ protests during the tournament.
Grant's brother, Eric Wahl's statement:
“My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay,” Wahl’s brother, Eric, said in an Instagram post on his now-private account. “I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help.”
Grant's death shocked the sports world well beyond the World Cup. Grant has covered great athletes in sports his Illustrated throughout his career, including then-high school prodigy LeBron James' famous SI cover story.
Fondly remembering Grant on Friday night, LeBron said, "It's unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best, and may he rest in paradise." Grant was only 49 years old.
