As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, car manufacturers are racing to come up with the next big thing in the industry. Sony and Honda, who announced a joint venture last year, have recently revealed their brand-new car brand: Afeela.
At the Consumer Electronics Show 2023, Sony Honda Mobility CEO Yasuhide Mizuno unveiled a prototype of the company's first car, a mid-sized sedan. While details about the vehicle were scarce, Mizuno explained that the focus of Afeela is on sensing and interacting with people. The car will be equipped with safety and driver assistance systems from Honda and entertainment and interactive features from Sony. In addition to driving dynamics and performance, the emphasis during development was also placed on software and user interface technology.
One unique feature of the Afeela is the media bar, a narrow exterior display screen running above the front bumper. This will allow the car to show information and interact with people outside the vehicle. Inside, the Afeela will offer a wealth of entertainment options thanks to the use of Unreal Engine graphics technology from Epic Games. The car will also have 45 cameras and sensors, some of which are used to detect the condition of the driver to ensure alertness and safety.
The Afeela will be available to order and purchase in 2025, with North American deliveries expected in 2026. As the electric car market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Afeela stacks up against the competition.
