COVID protests create chaos:
Protesters angered by strict Covid lockdown demand China's president resign in unprecedented condemnation as authorities in at least eight cities struggle to quell demonstrations that threaten the ruling Communist Party's rare direct challenge.

In Shanghai, hundreds chanted, "Step down, Xi Jinping! Resign, Communist Party!" in unprecedented defiance of the country's strict and increasingly costly zero-Covid policy.

Residents gather to mourn victims of fires in Xinjiang, speak out against zero coronaviruses and call for freedom and democracy.
On dozens of college campuses, students demonstrated or put up protest posters.

Massive anti-lockdown protests swept through Urumqi on Friday night, with residents of blocked neighborhoods removing barriers and taking to the streets in many parts of the country.
"Opposition to dictatorship!" the crowd shouted in unison. "We don't want lifelong rulers. We don't want emperors!" they screamed in thinly veiled regard to Xi, who previous month started a norm-shattering third term in office, reported CNN.
"We don't want lockdowns; we want freedom! Freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of arts, freedom of movement, and personal freedoms. Give me back my freedom!" The crowd called out.
