Pennsylvania police chief killed and an officer wounded in shootout


A man accused of shooting police later stole a car and was fatally shot after an exchange of fire with officers.


A police chief was shot and killed Monday outside Pittsburgh, and an officer was injured while pursuing a suspect wanted for probation violations, Allegheny County authorities said.


The suspect, wanted for a weapons probation violation, was found around 2 p.m., Allegheny County Sheriff Christopher Kearns said at a news conference Monday. in the Brackenridge area, 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on Monday. Police pursued the suspect on foot throughout the area and after 4 p.m. Mr. Kearns said the suspect shot and killed two police officers.

A police officer was shot in the head and died at the scene. Another officer was shot in the leg and was taken to an area hospital, where he was in stable condition as of Monday night, Mr. Kearns said.


The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office identified the officer who was shot as Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire. The identity of the injured officer is unknown.

Police identified the suspect as Aaron Swan, 28, of the Duquesne area southeast of Pittsburgh. After the shooting, Mr. Swan allegedly stole a 2014 Subaru Legacy and tried to flee the area, Allegheny County Police Department Assistant Sheriff Victor Joseph said.


Mr. Kearns said the shooting prompted multiple agencies, including local and state officials, to search for Mr. Swan.



At a news conference late Monday, Mr. Kearns said detectives later found the stolen vehicle among cars in the Pittsburgh area. When they tried to stop, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee and was pursued. Mr. Kearns said the driver of the vehicle overturned and fled into nearby woods.


Mr. Kearns said the suspect then fled the wooded area to avoid police and opened fire on them. Mr. Kearns said police returned fire and beat the suspect, who died at the scene.


Dozens of police vehicles joined Chief McIntyre's march Monday night, according to local media reports.
