It's official: Olivia Chow is Toronto's new mayor!

In Toronto's mayoral byelection, most polls have closed.

A record-breaking 102 candidates are running for Toronto's next mayor after a months-long campaign. The leading candidates include Ana Bailão, Brad Bradford, Olivia Chow, Anthony Furey, Mitzie Hunter, Josh Matlow and Mark Saunders.

A major focus of the campaign was to address the city's housing, affordability, congestion, and public safety issues.

8:57 P.M. EST: Olivia Chow's supporters have had a tense evening. Several polls have given her a solid lead for weeks. The early results, however, showed that Ana Bailão had a narrow edge.

A 46-year-old, Ana Bailão, a candidate for mayor of Toronto, is opening up new possibilities for the city. Her platform focuses on creating a safe and liveable city, in which the needs of the vulnerable populations are addressed. Bailão is committed to the idea of creating a city that puts people first and provides everyone with equal opportunities.

Bailão believes in investing in infrastructure and public services to make Toronto a more equitable place. Bailão's platform has been successful at creating a more inclusive city, with improved access to housing, transportation, and other resources. Her work has had a lasting impact on Toronto.


From 2010 to 2022, Ana Bailão represented Davenport on the Toronto City Council. Her term as deputy mayor of Toronto representing Toronto and East York ended in 2022. Bailão announced her intention to run for mayor in the 2023 by-election.

Olivia Chow served as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member of Parliament (MP) for Trinity-Spadina from 2006 to 2014.Her service on the Metro Toronto City Council dates back to 1992, and she served on the Toronto City Council from 1998 to 2005.Her third-place finish in the 2014 Toronto mayoral election came after runners-up Doug Ford and winner John Tory. Toronto mayoral by-election candidate Chow is the frontrunner.


It's a fierce mayoral election right now with Chow leading. Chow's main opponent, Bailão, is pushing hard to close the gap.
