In Berlin, an aquarium with 1 million litres of water and 1,500 tropical fish burst.
The "AquaDom," located in the lobby of the Radisson Blue Hotel, is said to be the world's largest standing cylindrical aquarium.
Two people were injured by falling glass, and police described the "incredible maritime damage."
More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene, but it was unclear why the €12.8m (£11.2m) water tank broke.
A spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade told the BBC that the vast majority of the fish had died, and the cold weather made rescue operations difficult. There are over 100 different species in the tank.
In front of the Radisson Blu, a pile of rubble in front of the former front door now hangs in the street - twisted at an angle by the exploding water tank.
