SEOUL, South Korea - A cargo truck crashed into a bus Thursday on a highway outside the South Korean capital, Seoul, setting off a blaze that killed at least five and injured 37 others, officials said.

It was not immediately known what caused the collision and fire or what cargo was being carried by the truck.

In a statement, the national fire agency said three people injured were in critical condition, and 34 others were lightly injured.

Fire officials said the crash occurred within the tunnel with the noise barriers along the freeway. Early television images showed plumes of black, dense smoke rising out of the tunnel, but firefighters said later that they would nearly extinguish the fire.

The public affairs unit at the fire department was not able to confirm where the five people killed were from at this time.
