U.S. President Joe Biden hosting France President Emmanuel Macron at the White House tonight, taking advantage of the state dinner for the first time in his presidency to reunite the Americans whose friendships were at stake until recently.
Two couples greeted each other warmly and both leaders repeating their commitment to peace and ending Russia's war on Ukraine, also agreeing to coordinate their response to China calling for stability on Tiawan straight jointly, as reports CNN.
More than 400 guests are expected to attend, amongst some famous names, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Stephen Colbert and Anna Wintour.
Strengthened ties with key allies. Sources close to the plans describe an outsized event under a tent on the White House grounds.
This has not only many Democrats seeking social time in the White House, but also many officials and political staff involved with it interested in strengthening ties with France.
The moment has special meaning because Mr. and Mrs. Biden were waiting to host a state dinner. The dinner is part of the US effort to revitalize relations with France.
This comes a year after the United States announced a surprising US-Australia submarine partnership. It overturned France's own submarine agreement with Australia, infuriating French officials.
The perilous relations are no small matter, given the array of major challenges facing the larger western alliance.
"If you look at what's going on in Ukraine, look at what's going on in the Indo-Pacific and the tensions with China, France is really at the center of all those things," said John Kirby, the National Security Council's coordinator for strategic communications.
"President Macron has been the dynamic leader inside the G7 ... so the President felt that this was exactly the right and the most appropriate country to start with for state visits."
