Employees at over 100 Starbucks locations went on strike to protest and favour union organizing

Employees at over 100 Starbucks locations went on strike last Thursday, Nov 17, 2022, to protest the company's alleged retaliation against union organizing.

Workers say they are underpaid, have inconsistent hours and face serious health and safety concerns at some of the 9,000 company-owned Starbucks locations.

“We remain committed to all partners and will continue to work together, side-by-side, to make Starbucks a company that works for everyone,” the company said Thursday in a statement.

As per several sources (cp24, yahoo), Starbucks, which opposes the union's efforts, said it was aware of the strike and respected employees' legal right to protest.

The Seattle-based company noted that the protests occurred at a fraction of the 9,000 company-owned locations in the United States.

Workers say they want better pay, more consistent schedules and more staff at busy stores. Stores in 25 states plan to take part in the labor action, according to organizers of Starbucks United Workers. Strikers handed out their own red trophies bearing the union logo.

At least 257 Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since late last year, according to the National Labor Relations Board. Votes in which workers chose not to organize were held at 57 stores.

Meanwhile, Starbucks asked the NLRB to temporarily suspend all union elections at its U.S. stores, citing a board employee's claim that district officials failed to coordinate properly with union organizers. The case conclusion is pending.
