The prime minister was set to meet with his displeased caucus on Wednesday.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to announce his future Monday morning at 10:45 ET. The announcement comes after months of questions about his leadership and a precipitous drop in Liberal polls.
Trudeau has been under pressure to resign in recent weeks following a new round of caucus upheaval following the resignation of Chrystia Freeland from cabinet on Dec. 16. Over the holidays, Trudeau spent two weeks reflecting on his future and was called by nearly every regional Liberal caucus to step down.
In his address to reporters, Trudeau will be speaking from Rideau Cottage. This will be his first media interview since Freeland resigned three weeks ago.
Trudeau is also set to meet with the disgruntled members of his team at a special meeting of the Liberal caucus on Wednesday.
There has been more than just internal pressure on the prime minister. It has become increasingly clear that the Liberals' official status may be at risk, along with calls for him to resign from his own party.
An Angus Reid Institute poll released at the end of December showed Liberal support plummeting to 16 percent and Conservative support at 45 percent. Only 16 percent of respondents wanted Trudeau to stay in power, while 46 percent wanted him to step down immediately. In February, 38 percent of respondents want an immediate federal election.
As a result of Trudeau's resignation, the Liberal party would undergo a leadership race for the position of prime minister, which will take place in October 2025. Canadians could be sent to the polls at any time because the Liberals only command a minority Parliament.
Early Monday morning, Trudeau's only engagement was a virtual participation in a meeting of the cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. ties.
