With thousands of commuters stranded by the storm in Mexico this week, the transport ministry said it would continue to "monitor the situation" and described what some people experienced during the holidays as "unacceptable."
Sunwing Vacations Inc. has issued widespread flight cancellations due to the winter storm, causing a chain reaction of crew and aircraft displacement. Other airlines have experienced similar disruptions due to poor flying conditions, but Sunwing's holiday destination has left many travellers stranded abroad.
In an email statement sent to CTV News, a spokesperson said, “Transport Canada [is] in contact with airlines and airports to ensure they have what they need to keep passengers safe.”
They added, "The safety of passengers and crews is our top priority.”
Additionally, many passengers expressed disapproval of the airline's lack of communication as they waited for word on when they would be able to return home.
“Canadians can file a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency. Our government will continue to ensure that these rights are protected,” the email said.
“Transport Canada will continue to work with all airports to do everything in its power to ensure that Canadians can travel safely and securely during the holiday season. We encourage passengers to stay informed of the situation by following the latest airport communications as they resume normal operations. Canadians can be assured that we are doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time.”
From September 8, the new rules will apply as part of the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, the spokesman said. These rules apply to flights that are delayed or cancelled for reasons beyond the airline's control, including major weather events and unsafe flight conditions.
