Six people, including a 73-year-old suspect, were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting at an apartment building in Vaughan, Ont., Sunday night, local police said.
York Regional Police said it was working to identify the victims and notify their families. The City of Vaughan is located less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of downtown Toronto in the York Region of Ontario and has a population of approximately 320,000.
Authorities have not released any further information about the victim, suspect, or suspect's motives.
York police received a call around 7:20 p.m. that an active male gunman had shot and killed several victims at a Vaughan apartment. Sunday local time (0020 GMT on Monday), the department said.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement Monday that the suspect was shot by police and pronounced dead at the scene.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca offered his condolences to the families of the victims at a news conference Monday and said the injured are recovering in hospital.
"Everybody is horrified ... to wake up to this news this morning, to hear it last night. People are just in absolute shock," Del Duca said.
The SIU, which investigates deaths involving police officers, said it was investigating the suspect's death, and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. SIU also noted that the gunman used a semi-automatic weapon.
