Canada's Fmr Lt. Governor David C. Onley died; he lived most of his life with partial paralysis

David C. Onley held the position from 2007- 2014 and was the 28th person to serve in the role in the province's history.




He lived most of his life with partial paralysis after childhood polio. He is considered a champion for accessibility after living with partial paralysis because of a polio infection he suffered as a toddler.


Before taking on the Governor, Onley worked in Journalism and even as an Anchor for CP24 when it was launched in 1999.


Onley was 72 years old.



Ontario's current Lt. Governor, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, has released a statement:


"Mr. Onley believed so deeply in the goodwill and firm practicality of Ontarians that he saw no reason why we could not lead the world in transforming society so that everyone is able to contribute something of value. And there is no doubt that his legacy has positively impacted the lives of people across Ontario."

"We are thankful for his legacy of championing disability for everyone. He was a gracious and committed Lieutenant Governor and even after his period in office he continued to contribute to the community in many different ways. Starting with his time as a respected broadcaster he remained down to earth and as such as maintained the respect and affection of people everywhere. He will be missed."
