Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says Justin Trudeau refused to keep her in his cabinet, so she resigned from Trudeau's cabinet.
OTTAWA — Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, has resigned from Justin Trudeau's cabinet, claiming he no longer wants her in the top economic position. She cited fiscal policy differences with Justin Trudeau as the reason for her resignation from the Liberal cabinet.
Freeland was set to present a fall economic report, which most analysts anticipate will reveal larger budget deficits than the government disclosed last year. The shocking announcement came after Trudeau offered Freeland "another position in Cabinet" on Monday morning.
She wrote that they are "at odds about the best path forward for Canada," an assertion she has downplayed in recent days after re-emerging reports of fraying tensions.
“Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the cabinet,” Freeland wrote in a shocking letter. “To be effective, a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence. In making your decision, you made clear that I no longer credibly enjoy that confidence.”
As a Liberal MP, Freeland says she will stay on and run for reelection in the future.
The move comes just hours before Freeland will release her fall economic update.
