According to reports, Boeing is considering the purchase of its supplier Spirit AeroSystems. It follows the incident involving Spirit, the supplier to Boeing jets, whose door panel flew out during flight.
Boeing has been given 90 days by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop a "comprehensive action plan" to improve its safety management system since the incident.
The former Air Structures Unit of Boeing, which was spun off in 2005, is now rumored to be in talks with Boeing. Currently, Spirit AeroSystems designs and builds air structures for every Boeing aircraft in production, as well as rival aircraft such as Airbus. As the main supplier of the 737 Max jet, the company is currently at the center of a number of quality issues.
Now, according to sources familiar with the matter, these suppliers have hired bankers for the purpose of exploring strategic options, and they have also held preliminary discussions with Boeing, which now appear to be weighing on Boeing shares and sending Spirit to its highest level. On Friday, Spirit's shares jumped by more than 10%, valuing it at more than $3.7 billion. However, shares in Boeing slid more than 1%.
Boeing said in a statement to Reuters news agency on Friday: "We believe that the reintegration of Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems' manufacturing operations would strengthen aviation safety, improve quality, and serve the interests of our customers, employees, and shareholders."
The representatives of these companies have not commented on the rumors that last year Spirit AeroSystems restructured key relationships with Boeing, its largest customer, in order to strengthen and boost its suppliers, which are now managed by catch and hand. This is a sign that they are working more closely together.
