Andrew Tate and brother Tristan arrested in Romania for human trafficking

Controversial internet influencer Andrew Tate has reportedly been arrested as part of an investigation into human trafficking and rape in Romania.

Mr. Tate - who was arrested along with his brother Tristan - searched his home in the capital Bucharest.

Reuters said the brothers' lawyers confirmed their detention.

The former kickboxer shot to fame in 2016 when he was dropped from the British TV show Big Brother over a video that appeared to show him attacking a woman.

He shot to internet fame when Twitter banned him from saying women should "take responsibility" when they were sexually assaulted. He is now reinstated.

Romania's Investigative Directorate for Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) issued a statement without naming the Tate brothers, saying two British nationals and two Romanian nationals were involved in a criminal group focused on human trafficking.

The brothers have been under investigation since April, along with two Romanian nationals.

The video, which was widely circulated on social media, appears to show Mr. Tate and his brother being led from a mansion.

A video of the raid was also released, showing guns, knives and money in one room.

Mr. Tate emigrated to Romania five years ago.

"The four suspects ... appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost," prosecutors said, according to the Reuters news agency.
