A huge learning Gap in young kids due to COVID is evolving and challenging for parents

If your child starts kindergarten in September 2019 or later, you may notice huge learning gaps in their ability to learn new words, speak, read, write, or solve math problems.

Parents in Ontario, Canada and around the world are addressing a major issue for their young children, who are now facing an educational crisis amid the CUPE strikes. While teachers continue to follow the Ontario curriculum as expected, students with weak foundations are unable to cope with information that changes every day.

During COVID, we stick them to computer screens online or remotely for 6-7 hours a day, and the dangers of the 5G internet are only part of the dire consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Young children face many issues related to literacy, social development, consistency, continuity, punctuality, self-regulation, and more.

Kindergarteners in grades 1-2 in 2020 still have a "kindergarten" level because many are reluctant to pass reading beyond reading level 1. Many parents are complaining as they bear the brunt of the pandemic and high inflation, layoffs and high-interest rates, while children lose much-needed attention that is vital to their upbringing.

One mother said, "I am so worried and concerned. My child in grade 2 is now losing her confidence, not being able to read full sentences and sitting quietly in the classroom."

Parents have no choice but to take extreme measures, such as choosing expensive private schools and extra tutoring, which puts enough pressure on young people because they also have to attend school. In lieu of catch-up payment plans, the Ontario government, Ministry of Education or the School Boards need to invent new ideas and solutions to help students catch up by offering additional or free courses, slowing down or considering re-learning courses, and changing the curriculum, it will not only help students read and write but also rebuild their self-confidence. So much has changed in the past two years, including the way of learning and adapting, so why not the curriculum?
