Let it snow, let it snow and let it snow!
Get ready for some more snow, Ontarians. The Greater Toronto Area might get as much as 50 cm of intense snow this weekend.
The weather network states, "The pattern setting up over the Great Lakes is ripe for a prolonged lake-effect snow event across southern Ontario. Extremely dangerous travel is expected within these snow squalls through the weekend."
Parts of southern Ontario could see several laps of snow over the weekend as the pattern of persistent gusts from the Great Lakes becomes more favourable. On Sunday, waist-deep snow is possible in parts of the province, severely disrupting traffic in affected areas. Niagara Falls is expected to see 30-60 cm of snow, whereas warnings have been issued for areas Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Kingston, Prince Edward County, Parry Sound, Muskoka, Oxford, and Brant.
Danger zone: Maximum snowfall totals
The most populous areas threatened by heavy snow will be the northeastern shores of Lake Erie and Ontario. The Niagara Peninsula experiences very heavy snowfall, which can create a sharp gradient between heavy snow and beautiful winter landscapes.
Further north, the most at risk of damaging snow along the Lake Ontario coast will see snow along Highway 401 east of Cobourg.
According to The Weather Network, storm totals vary widely over short distances and between communities due to the nature of lake-effect snow. There may be extensive totals of 25+ cm throughout the area and 50+ cm locally in the most severe and intractable bands that form.
"Road closures are possible," Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said in a snow gust watch issued late Wednesday. "Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone."
